From the Publisher: Do You Flip Your Lid? Do You Lose Your Cool?
Many students approach their learning with a reactive mindset, especially those dealing with trauma, anxiety, ADHD, sensory dysregulation, or executive function challenges. It's crucial to shift these students from being "reactive learners" to becoming more responsive individuals. This transition is an essential social and emotional tool for self-awareness and self-management.
Teaching students alternative ways to manage life's stresses is vital. By explaining how the brain works and introducing the concept of "flipping our lids," we can help children become more aware of their bodily and emotional responses when faced with overwhelming situations. Mindfulness practices are particularly effective in helping students learn to be "Calm, Cool Kids."
When my brain functions properly, I can listen and learn with ease, and school feels manageable. However, on days when I "flip my lid," I struggle. Whether I react with aggression, freezing, or avoidance, it detracts from my learning experience. I wish to overcome these moments and remain a calm, collected individual.

Note to Parents and Caregivers
Navigating childhood can be challenging, and learning demands can be intense. Every child learns at their own pace, so it's crucial for them to recognize the signs of "flipping their lids"—such as a red face, racing heart, tense limbs, whooshing ears, and unfocused eyes—when they are angry, overwhelmed, or upset. Use this book as a starting point to discuss these signals with your child. Explain that adults experience these reactions too, and emphasize the importance of having skills to stay calm.
Mindful breathing is an excellent technique for calming the heart, body, and mind. Starting each day with mindful breathing can help everyone feel safe, loved, and connected. Similarly, practicing mindful breathing before bed can help unwind from the day's activities.
Wishing you well,
Kellie Doyle Bailey
